Thinking Smart City with a focus on emerging identity elements

Volpi, V., A. Opromolla, R. Grimaldi, V. De Cecio, M. Palatucci, C. M. Medaglia - In this paper we agree that the identity of a city is continuously redefined by emergent properties expressed through environmental transformation. So we identify and emphasize some elements that may help designers to appropriately consider the continuously changing state of a city.

NONLINEAR COMPRESSIVE FAILURE ANALYSIS OF BIAXIALLY LOADED FIBER REINFORCED MATERIALS

Fabrizio Greco, Andrea Pranno, Medaglia Carlo Maria, Lorenzo Leonetti, Rosa Penna - The compressive failure behavior of defected periodic fiber-reinforced composites subjected to macroscopic biaxial loadings is here analyzed from both the theoretical and numerical point of view. The coupled effects of local fiber buckling and matrix or fiber/matrix interface microcracks under unilateral self-contact are included in the analysis by adopting an original full finite deformation approach.

Local stress in periodic composites via the Riesz summability method

Caporale A, Luciano R, Medaglia C, Penna R. - Different summation methods of multidimensional trigonometric Fourier series are adopted for approximating the local strain and stress in elastic periodic composites. In fact, approximating the exact solution of a problem with the original partial sums of Fourier series can produce unwanted effects, such as the Gibbs phenomenon at the jump discontinuities that may occur at the interface between the constituents of the composites.

Water used to be infinite: a Brazilian tale of climate change

Santos, J.R.d., Franco, E.F., Carvalho, H.C., Armenia, S., Pompei, A., Medaglia, C.M. - The purpose of this study is to analyze the impacts of different policies to address the water supply crisis experienced by the metropolitan region of Sao Paulo during 2013 to 2015 and evaluate the resilience of its water supply system for the coming years.

The dynamic role of Italian Energy strategies in the worldwide scenario

Guido Marseglia; Elisa Rivieccio; Carlo Maria Medaglia - The purpose of the paper is to set out ideas regarding a systematic approach that defines the Italian National energy strategies, considering the standards imposed from European Union. Design/methodology/approach: A conceptual framework to estimate a model to define the energy policies for different sectors in the Italian case is underlined.

Pollutant emissions of a biomass gasifier inside a multifuel energy plant

Franco Cotana; Sabrina Vittori; Guido Marseglia; Carlo Maria Medaglia; Valentina Coccia; Alessandro Petrozzi; Andrea Nicolini; Gianluca Cavalaglio - Several benefits in clean energy and pollutant emissions can be offered from biomass energy application. This research analyzes a biomass gasifier installed at the University of Perugia and presents the description of a multifuel biomass energy plant with all its components: the combustion chamber and the heat exchanger, installed to supply the thermal input to the turbine, with 100 kW electric power and 1 MW thermal power.
