A System Dynamics perspective on a Viable Systems approach definition for sustainable value

Iandolo Francesca, Barile Sergio, Armenia Stefano, Carrubbo Luca - Aim of this work is to shed light on sustainable value and develop a model, based on vSa and translated at applicative level through the system dynamics methodology for measuring sustainable value. By adopting vSa perspective, value, characterized by strongly subjective contents, will be considered as a vector quantity, as the result of the subjective weighting of the different dimensions that may change according to the considered organization.

Individual Behavioras a Defense in the “War on Cyberterror”: A System Dynamics Approach

Armenia S, Tsaples G - The problem of cyberterrorism, despite its contested nature, is an important area of research. Scholars agree that the most dangerous targets for such attacks are critical infrastructure and organizations that are vital to society due to their interconnectedness to the modern world and their increasing reliance on the cyber domain for their operations. Thus, their security and protection against cyberterrorismis of elevated importance. Given the lack of documented cases of cyberterrorism, the purpose of this articleis to simulate the threat of a terrorist act on a critical infrastructure, using a computer virus and to investigate how the individual behavior of employees affects security.

Marketing competition on a new product introduction – a structural analysis using systems thinking

Stefano Armenia, Alessandro Pompei, Vittorio Pupillo, Fabio Nonino - Launching a new product on the market is a strategic activity that needs specific investments and a specific organisation. There are multiple factors that determine the success of a new product on the market but their direct effects are not often very well observable (marketing for example). With this study, we analysed the systemic structure underlying the dynamics related to the introduction of a new product on the market.

Nobody deserves this fate: the vicious cycle of low human development in Guinea-Bissau

BassiroSó, Eduardo Ferreira Franco, Hamilton Coimbra Carvalho, Joaquim Rocha dos Santos, Stefano Armenia - This paper aims to understand and explore the causal relationship of elements responsible for the macro vicious cycle of poverty in Guinea-Bissau, and discuss policies to break it. The study presents a critical stance towards common recommendations from international agencies, and it provides a blueprint for development of more effective public policies.

Analysing management effectiveness and project performance through a system dynamics approach: the case of software development projects

Armenia S - While existing research has mainly focused on project management’s static view, our work investigates the impacts of projects’ structure and behavioural dynamics on their performance, with a specific focus on the influence of some peculiar development processes. A dynamic simulation model of a single-phase project was built using the system dynamics methodology. The model integrates several previously developed and tested project structures and adds a separate structure for the negotiation process. Simulations describe the behaviours generated by the interaction of customized development processes in single-phase projects.

Critical Events and Critical Infrastructures: A System Dynamics Approach

Armenia S, Tsaples G, Carlini C - Critical events like natural disasters or terrorist attacks have evolved to a realistic concern over the last decade. Anticipation and timely decision-making are fundamental to ensure positive outcomes, stability and safety especially with concern to Critical Infrastructure. The purpose of this paper is to promote a new framework for efficient and effective crisis management in the area of Critical Infrastructures.

A system dynamics simulation tool for the management of extreme events in urban transportation systems

Armenia S, Tsaples G, Carlini C, Volpetti C, Onori R - The objective of the paper is to present a simulation-based interactive environment that could help decision-makers to evaluate the direct, indirect, social and economic effects of a public transportation system closedown. The methodology that was used for the development of the simulator is system dynamics, because it is used to understand how a system’s behaviour emerges and how insights can be gained into how policy changes might alter the very same behaviour.
